Share the Love with Vulnerable Seniors This Year

Exciting news! For the 12th year running, the Meals on Wheels network is participating in the 2019 Subaru Share the Love Event. Over the past eleven years, Subaru and its retailers have helped Meals on Wheels to deliver more than 2.2 million meals nationwide to seniors in need.

Why does Subaru support Meals on Wheels? Too many seniors are struggling to stay independent and healthy. One in four seniors lives alone in isolation and one in seven seniors might not know from where their next meal is coming. This is simply unacceptable, which is why the Senior Connection provides the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to the seniors of Blaine County.  This vital support keeps seniors in their own homes, where they want to be.

We’re incredibly grateful to Subaru and its Retailers for supporting our organization and the seniors we serve. With that in mind, we thought you might want to learn a little bit more about the Subaru Share the Love Event.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

This November 14, 2019, through January 2, 2020, for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased, Subaru will donate $250 to the customer’s choice of participating charities.* Meals on Wheels is one of four national participating charities and has been since the inception of the event. Through this event, as a member of Meals on Wheels America, the Senior Connection will receive a share of the donation from Subaru vehicles sold at participating Subaru Retailers.

You might not be in the market to purchase a new car, but if you are, please look into the Subaru Share the Love Event to learn more. If you’re not shopping for a new vehicle, you can still help by spreading the word to your family and friends. A few quick and easy ways to do that:

  • Share our posts about the Share the Love Event on Facebook:

And remember: this holiday season you can ensure our senior neighbors are not forgotten, when you purchase or lease a new Subaru and select Meals on Wheels as your charity of choice.

*Disclaimer: Subaru will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased from November 14, 2019, through January 2, 2020, to four national charities designated by the purchaser or lessee. Pre-approved Hometown Charities may be selected for donation depending on retailer participation. For every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased during the campaign period, participating retailers will donate a minimum of $50 in total to their registered Hometown Charities. Purchasers/lessees must make their charity designations by January 15, 2020. The four national charities will receive a guaranteed minimum donation of $250,000 each. See your local Subaru retailer for details or visit subaru.com/share. All donations made by Subaru of America, Inc.

Letter to the Editor – July 2019

This letter is in response to “Seniors need Twin Falls transportation”, in last week’s Idaho Mountain Express.

At the Senior Connection, we have long recognized the need of our seniors for transport to and from medical appointments both in the valley and regionally.   To address this, in 2017, we partnered with Interlink Volunteer Caregivers (IVC) in Twin Falls.  The Senior Connection recruits volunteers, takes the calls from those needing a ride, and tries to pair their schedule with a volunteer who drives them to and from their appointments.  IVC provides mileage reimbursement to our volunteer drivers.   Each driver provides their own vehicle and insurance while IVC provides excess auto and general liability insurance.

The more volunteer drivers in our pool, the more often we are able to accommodate a senior, or any community resident, who needs a ride.  Our volunteer coordinator pairs riders and drivers in relation to their individual schedules.  It sometimes happens that there is not a volunteer available for a certain time/day and we are working to recruit more volunteers so that happens less often.

If you would like to make a true difference in someone’s life, please consider becoming one of our volunteer drivers.   If medical transport is not a fit for you, we have many other volunteer opportunities available and your time is truly valued and appreciated.  Call us at 208-788-3468 for more information, or check out our website www.seniorconnectionidaho.org

March for Meals

The annual March for Meals celebration commemorates the historic day in March of 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. Since 2002, community-based Meals on Wheels programs from across the country have joined forces for the annual awareness campaign to celebrate this successful public-private partnership and garner the support needed to fill the gap between the seniors served and those still in need.

The month of March is a fitting time to not only celebrate the successful history of Meals on Wheels, but also bring us together to support a solution that will strengthen communities into the future,” said Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels America. “With 12,000 Americans turning 60 each day, now is the time to invest in these vital programs so that we can provide every senior in need with the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks that will enable them to live healthier and independent in their own homes.”

Help us spread the word in our community!  Let people know that we have Meals on Wheels in Blaine County and just $5 provides a meal to a homebound senior.  Donations can be made HERE on our website!

And please help us thank our cheerful, dedicated, and tireless Meals on Wheels volunteers!  We could not do it without them!

Federal Trade Commission Scam Warning

We received a scam warning from the Administration for Community Living about a social security scam and wanted to pass it on to you!

The Federal Trade Commission is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money.

In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social Security number is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. He will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. He also might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

All of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never call and ask for your Social Security number. It will not ask you to pay anything. It won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You cannot trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you in this way. Do not confirm the last 4 digits. Do not give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you by phone asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is always a scammer no matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

If you have spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

February is National Senior Independence Month

“I want to stay in my own home!” is an often heard wish from people who are growing older.   Aging in place is an option for most, and part of our mission here at the Senior Connection is helping Blaine County seniors maintain the independence to do just that.

Planning early can be one of the most important steps to aging in place.  Making necessary changes or remodels to your home, as well as making the necessary financial, legal and health care decisions in advance is much easier than trying to do it in the middle of a crisis.  It is also helpful to be aware of community  resources that are available in advance of a change in your  condition.

The Senior Connection offers programs and services that support the continuum of aging in place.  From offering lunch here at the center to help provide good nutrition and socialization, fitness classes to help maintain mobility and health, transportation when driving is no longer an option, to a variety of home care opportunities for when it comes time for a little help.

Joanne and our compassionate home care team provide a range of services including:

Joanne Cox
Home Care Manager

  • Homemaker Services
    • Help with light housekeeping and laundry, grocery shopping/errands, transportation, cooking and more.
  • Personal Care Services
    • Help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, mobility assistance, companionship and more.
  • Respite Services — Help with companionship and supervision for caregiver respite and caregiver support groups.

Please let us know if you have any questions about aging in place.  If we do not provide the assistance you need, we know who does!
